巽上 · 艮下Wind over Mountain
卦辞The Judgement
渐：女归吉，利贞。Jiàn. Going to one's place step by step: good fortune. Favorable to be steadfast and upright.
事情要循序渐进、按步骤推进——不能跳跃、不能急功近利。艮山在下属土居东北，巽木在上属木居东南——山上有树，树在山上慢慢长高。木克土，树根扎进山里，一年一年地长——这不是一夜之间的事。像鸿雁迁徙一样，一步步飞高。守住正道、稳步推进，会有持久的好结果。
Things must move forward by stages, by steps — no leaps, no shortcuts. The lower trigram Gèn is Mountain, element Earth, in the northeast; the upper trigram Xùn is Wood, element Wood, in the southeast — a tree on the mountain, growing slowly taller. Wood checks Earth, the tree's roots driving into the mountain, growing year by year — not the work of a single night. Like wild geese moving in their seasonal flight, rising step by step. Hold to the right path and advance steadily; the good fortune that comes will last.
大象The Image
《象》曰：山上有木，渐；君子以居贤德善俗。Trees grow upon the mountain: the image of Gradual Progress. The noble one, accordingly, abides in worthy virtue and improves the customs of the people.
六爻The Six Lines
初六，鸿渐于干；小子厉，有言，无咎。The wild goose advances to the riverbank. The young one: danger. There are words; no fault.
鸿雁刚飞到水边——艮山初爻，山脚水边，年轻人会觉得危险、议论纷纷。但只要按部就班，不会有问题。
The wild goose has just landed at the shore — Gèn's Mountain, first line, the shore at the mountain's foot — the young will sense danger and people will talk. But if one moves step by step, no real problem follows.
六二，鸿渐于磐，饮食衎衎，吉。The wild goose advances to the great rock. Eating and drinking, contented, contented. Good fortune.
鸿雁飞到磐石上——艮山居中，山腰磐石，可以从容地饮食。不是白吃白喝，是踏实安顿下来。吉。
The wild goose lands on the rock — Gèn's Mountain centered, the boulder on the mountainside — eating and drinking at ease. Not eating in idleness, but settling securely. Good fortune.
九三，鸿渐于陆，夫征不复，妇孕不育，凶；利御寇。The wild goose advances to the high plateau. Those who set out do not return. What is conceived is not brought forth. Misfortune. Favorable to repel invaders.
鸿雁飞到陆地上——艮山唯一的阳爻，山最硬，出行的人回不来、孕育的事没有结果——离散的局面。但用来防御外敌反而合适。
The wild goose to the plateau — the one yang line of Gèn, the hardest of the mountain — those who leave do not return, what was begun does not come to term: a scene of separation. But for resisting an outside threat, the situation is suited.
六四，鸿渐于木，或得其桷，无咎。The wild goose advances to the tree. Perhaps it finds a flat branch. No fault.
鸿雁飞到树上——巽木初爻，树枝——找到安稳的位置，临时找到容身之地，找到安稳的位置（找对了树枝）——没事。临时找到容身之地。
The wild goose alights in a tree, finding a perch (the right branch) — Xùn's Wood, first line, a branch — a secure spot found, a temporary shelter — no fault. A temporary resting place is enough.
九五，鸿渐于陵，妇三岁不孕；终莫之胜，吉。The wild goose advances to the hill. For three years, nothing is conceived; in the end, nothing can stand in the way. Good fortune.
鸿雁飞到山陵上——巽木居中，树已长高，三年都没有结果，但最终还是吉。慢慢来，终有所成。
The wild goose climbs to the hill — Xùn's Wood centered, the tree grown tall — though nothing comes of it for three years, in the end good fortune comes. Go slowly; the right outcome will be reached.
上九，鸿渐于陆，其羽可用为仪，吉。The wild goose advances to the great heights. Its feathers can be used as ceremonial ornaments. Good fortune.
鸿雁飞到高处——巽木到极处，树冠，羽毛洁白可作仪式之用。最高的状态——不是占有，是成为典范。
The wild goose at the highest place — Xùn's Wood at its extreme, the crown of the tree — its white plumes adorn the ritual. The highest state — not possession, but standing as a pattern for others.
