Gèn · Keeping Still

Mountain doubled

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Gèn. Keeping the back still; not getting hold of the body. Walking in the courtyard; not seeing the people. No fault.

Stopping, holding back, staying quiet — this is the wisdom now. Gèn sits in the northeast, element Earth — two Gèn stacked, mountain beyond mountain, unmoving as a mountain. The northeast is the place of “ending and beginning,” where all things both end and start — only by halting can one set out anew. To force movement when one should stop creates trouble. Knowing when to stop and when to move is the real ability. Hold to your place and your measure; do not cross the line.

大象The Image

Mountain joined to mountain: the image of Keeping Still. The noble one, accordingly, does not let his thoughts stray beyond his place.
