兑上 · 坎下Lake over Water

卦辞The Judgement

困：亨；贞，大人吉，无咎；有言不信。Kùn. Prosperous and smooth. Steadfast. For the great person, good fortune, no fault. There are words, but they are not believed.

陷入困境——资源、机会、能量都不足。坎水在下属水居北方，兑泽在上属金居西方——泽里有水才是泽，现在水在泽下面，泽里没水了，干了。金生水，泽本该生水，但水都漏到下面去了——资源耗尽，这就是困。但困境是君子的修行场——身困而道亨。在艰难中不放弃原则、不改变志向，反而会成长。

You're hemmed in — short on resources, opportunities, and energy. The lower trigram Kǎn is Water, element Water, in the north; the upper trigram Duì is Lake, element Metal, in the west — a lake is a lake only with water in it, but here the water has sunk below the lake, and the lake is dry. Metal generates Water, the lake should give rise to water, but it has all leaked away below — the resource spent, and this is Confinement. But confinement is the proving ground of the superior person: the body is trapped, yet the way wins through. To not abandon your principles and not change your aims amid hardship is itself a kind of growth.

大象The Image

《象》曰：泽无水，困；君子以致命遂志。The lake has no water: the image of Oppression. The noble one, accordingly, will stake his life to fulfill his purpose.

六爻The Six Lines

初六Initial Six

初六，臀困于株木，入于幽谷，三岁不觌。Buttocks confined to a tree stump. Entering a gloomy valley. For three years, unseen.

屁股困在树桩上（坐立不安），坎水初爻，水刚入坑——又被赶到幽暗的山谷里，三年都见不到天日，又被赶到幽暗的山谷里——三年都见不到天日。状态很糟，需要长时间忍耐。

Hemmed in at the tree stump (can't get comfortable), Kǎn's Water, first line, just fallen into the pit — driven into a dark valley, out of sight for three years — then driven into a gloomy valley — out of sight for three years. The state is bad; it calls for a long endurance.

九二Second Nine

九二，困于酒食，朱绂方来，利用享祀；征凶，无咎。Confined amid wine and food. The scarlet sash is just arriving. Favorable to use it for offerings. Going forward: misfortune. No fault.

正处于物质或精力的匮乏期，坎水中唯一的阳爻——好饭好菜不够吃，但好消息在路上，急躁追赶反而坏事，但好的转机——比如重要的合作邀请、提拔机会——正在路上。这时最忌讳急躁追赶，保持耐心和诚意才能稳稳承接住。眼下委屈，不是终局。

You're in a lean stretch, short on means and energy — the one yang line within Kǎn — not enough good food to eat, but good news on the road, and hasty pursuit only spoils it — but a good turn (an important offer, a chance for advancement) is on the way. The thing to avoid now is haste; only patience and sincerity will let you catch it. The hardship of the moment is not the end.

六三Third Six

六三，困于石，据于蒺藜；入于其宫，不见其妻，凶。Confined by rocks, resting on thorns. Entering his house and not seeing his wife. Misfortune.

被困在石头中（动弹不得），又靠在荆棘上（无处依靠），回家也见不到妻子——坎水到三爻，水深且乱——四面楚歌的最糟糕状态，需要彻底的改变，四面楚歌的最糟糕状态。需要彻底的改变。

Trapped among rocks (unable to move), leaning on brambles (no support), going home to find no wife — Kǎn's Water at the third line, deep and turbid — the worst state, beset on every side, calling for a thorough change — the worst state, beset on every side. It calls for a thorough change.

九四Fourth Nine

九四，来徐徐，困于金车，吝，有终。Coming slowly, slowly. Confined in a metal carriage. Humiliation. There is an end.

慢慢地、缓缓地往前走——兑泽初爻，水刚进泽——被金属做的车困住，有点遗憾但最终能到，被金属做的车困住（行动迟缓），有点遗憾但最终能到。

Coming forward slowly, haltingly — Duì's Lake, first line, the water just entering the lake — held up by a metal carriage, some regret, but in the end you arrive — held up by a metal carriage (movement stalled), with some regret; but in the end you reach where you mean to go.

九五Fifth Nine

九五，劓刖，困于赤绂；乃徐有说，利用祭祀。Nose and feet cut off. Confined by the scarlet sash. Slowly there comes joy. Favorable to use it for offerings.

受了刑罚、被困在尊位上——兑泽居中，泽水被堵——但能慢慢解脱，靠真诚的祭祀来积福，但能慢慢解脱。靠真诚的祭祀（仪式感、回归本心）来积福。

Punished and hemmed in even on the honored seat — Duì's Lake centered, the lake-water dammed — but release comes slowly, blessing built through sincere offering — but relief comes slowly. Build up blessing through sincere offering (ritual, a return to your true heart).

上六Top Six

上六，困于葛藟，于臲；曰动悔有悔，征吉。Confined by creeping vines, on unsteady ground. Saying, "To move is to regret." If one repents and then goes forward: good fortune.

被葛藤缠绕、困在不安的境地——兑泽到极处，水干了——一动就后悔，但只要有动作就好，不动一定凶，一动就后悔。但只要有动作就好，不动一定凶——动起来才有出路。

Tangled in vines, perched on uneasy ground — Duì's Lake at its extreme, the water dried up — every move brings regret, but to act at all is good, while stillness is sure misfortune — every move brings regret. But as long as you act, that's good; to stay frozen is sure misfortune — movement is the way out.
