Méng · Childhood

Mountain over Water

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Méng. Prosperous and smooth. It is not I who seek the young and unenlightened — the young and unenlightened seek me. At the first divination, I instruct. To repeat is disrespectful; being disrespectful, I give no further instruction. Favorable to be steadfast and upright.

You — or some matter at hand — is in an immature, unformed state. The lower trigram Kǎn is Water, in the north, the inner confusion and danger; the upper trigram Gèn is Mountain, in the northeast, the outer obstruction and halt. The water wants to flow; the mountain blocks it — this is Méng. The most damaging thing now is overconfidence; humility in seeking guidance is everything. But mind the image: the water is pinned beneath the mountain. For the spring to well up, it does not wait for the mountain to dig it out — it finds a crack and seeps through on its own. Go find teachers, elders, experts — they aren't going to chase you. Ask the right question once, take it in; pressing the same point over and over only wears people out.

大象The Image

A spring issues from the foot of the mountain: the image of Youthful Folly. The noble one, accordingly, acts with resolve and so nurtures character.

六爻The Six Lines

01
初六Initial Six

Releasing the ignorant. Favorable to use the model of punishment, to free them from the shackles. Going forward leads to regret.

At the start of learning anything — or any new role — firm structure and rules are what build the foundation. Kǎn's Water, first line, just flowing from the source — the moment it is easiest to divert. Letting yourself stay loose early on makes correction nearly impossible later. The strictness of the start is actually the greatest kindness.

02
九二Second Nine

Embracing the ignorant. Good fortune. Taking a wife is good fortune. The son can keep the family.

You already have the ability to embrace the shortcomings of others. The second line is a yang line in the middle of Kǎn — a light within the water: it can see clearly itself, and light the way for others too. You can take up the role of leader, guide, or teacher — in your family, your team, your children's upbringing. This is the position you're suited for. Step into it.

03
六三Third Six

Do not take this woman as wife. Seeing a man of wealth, she loses herself. Nothing is favorable.

Don't be drawn to someone just because they are wealthy, powerful, or impressive on the surface. The third line is a yin line out of place, Kǎn's water restless and unsettled — easily lured off course by the surface glitter of 'metal' (gain). Look at the substance. Being dazzled by appearances will make you lose your own footing and judgment. Hold to your principles; don't let illusions sweep you up.

04
六四Fourth Six

Hemmed in by ignorance. Regret.

You're cut off — can't hear advice, can't find a guide. The fourth line, yin, sits beneath Gèn's Mountain, and the mountain bears down harder — the water is dammed shut and wisdom cannot get out. If you stay this way you'll just stall. The only way out is to actively break the isolation and start asking the right people.

05
六五Fifth Six

The childlike ignorance. Good fortune.

Staying open, eager, and willing to learn like a child is your real advantage. The fifth line, yin, sits within Gèn's Mountain — the mountain is high yet holds itself with softness: the highest peak is the one that best knows how to bow. No matter your age or status, those who can put aside their position and learn will always find someone willing to teach and lift them up.

06
上九Top Nine

Striking down ignorance. Not favorable to act as a robber; favorable to ward off robbers.

For stubborn and willfully closed-off people or situations, firmer measures are sometimes needed. Gèn is the hand, the act of striking; the top line is the mountain's summit, where the force lands hardest. But the aim is to lead them back to the right path, not to punish or retaliate. This is correction, not revenge — and proportion is everything.
