Jiā Rén · The Household

Wind over Fire

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Jiā Rén. Favorable for a woman to be steadfast and upright.

This is about family bonds, inner order, and each person playing their proper role. The lower trigram Lí is Fire, element Fire, in the south; the upper trigram Xùn is Wind, element Wood, in the southeast — wind born out of fire, for it's the fire heating the air that makes the wind. Wood generates Fire: the wind feeds the fire, the fire warms the family air — an inner circulation, a self-contained system. Everyone should do their own part well — the inner sphere and the outer sphere each clearly defined (not a matter of gender, but of clear roles). A harmonious household makes all things prosper — settle the inside, and the outside settles too.

大象The Image

Wind comes forth from fire: the image of the Family. The noble one, accordingly, gives substance to his words and constancy to his conduct.

六爻The Six Lines

01
初九Initial Nine

Guarding the household. Regret vanishes.

At the founding of a family or a team, set the rules from the startLí's Fire, first line, the flame just lit — while the fire is still low, set the fire-rules first — this "nip it in the bud" is crucial. Waiting until problems appear to fix them is too late.

02
六二Second Six

Making no willful decisions; tending to the food within the home. Steadfast and upright: good fortune.

Don't push to the front; do your own part wellLí's Fire centered, the heat at its truest — doing the daily caretaking well at home is itself the merit — the daily caretaking. Keeping to your role is itself good fortune — no need to make a show of yourself.

03
九三Third Nine

The household scolding, scolding. Regret over the severity, yet good fortune. The women and children laughing, laughing. In the end, humiliation.

Being strict with the family carries some regretLí's Fire at the third line, the fire turning fierce — strictness is bitter, but better than letting things run loose — but it beats indulgent neglect. Strict with love is more responsible than letting things slide.

04
六四Fourth Six

Enriching the household. Great good fortune.

Bringing prosperity to the householdXùn's Wind, first line, the wind rising off the fire — inside a roaring warmth, outside a fresh breeze, the harmonious house prospering — great good fortune. Being able to make your family flourish, in means and in spirit, is a true accomplishment.

05
九五Fifth Nine

The king brings his influence to the household. Do not worry. Good fortune.

Holding the family together with dignity and love bothXùn's Wind centered, the wind at its softest — in the home you don't press people with power, you move them with feeling — no need to worry, the outcome is good. This fatherly care is what binds a household.

06
上九Top Nine

Sincere, with dignity. In the end, good fortune.

Govern the household with sincerity and dignityXùn's Wind at its extreme — the wind carries far, but its root is in the home, and authority begins with self-examination — able to look inward and keep correcting yourself — and the end is good fortune. Family governance is, at root, self-cultivation.
