卦辞The Judgement
明夷：利艰贞。Míng Yí. Favorable to be steadfast and upright through hardship.
光明被遮蔽、才能被压制——身处困境。离火在下属火居南方，坤土在上属土居西南——太阳落到地平线以下，天黑了。火生土，光明被大地吞没，不是火灭了，是被挡住了。这时不能锋芒毕露——要藏起锋芒、隐藏才能、低调做事。表面糊涂，内心清明。守住自己，等天亮。
The light is veiled, your talent suppressed — you're in a dark passage. The lower trigram Lí is Fire, element Fire, in the south; the upper trigram Kūn is Earth, element Earth, in the southwest — the sun has sunk below the horizon and the sky has gone dark. Fire generates Earth: the light is swallowed by the great land — the fire isn't out, it's blocked. This is no time to flash your edge. Hide the sharpness, conceal the ability, keep a low profile. Foolish on the surface, clear within. Hold yourself, and wait for daybreak.
大象The Image
《象》曰：明入地中，“明夷”；君子以莅众，用晦而明。Brightness sinks into the earth: the image of Darkening of the Light. The noble one, accordingly, governs the crowd by veiling his brilliance and yet remaining clear.
六爻The Six Lines
初九，明夷于飞，垂其翼；君子于行，三日不食。有攸往，主人有言。The wounded light in flight, drooping its wings. The superior person, traveling, goes three days without eating. He has somewhere to go; the host has words of reproach.
处境艰难得连路都不好走（垂下翅膀的飞行）——离火初爻，火光被压在最底下——像受伤的鸟垂下翅膀飞，忍饥挨饿也要走，可能要离开舒适区、忍饥挨饿。但只要有原则、为了正义，再难都值得。
The way ahead is so hard that even moving is a struggle (flight with drooping wings) — Lí's Fire, first line, the light pressed to the very bottom — like a wounded bird flying with drooping wings, going on though starving — you may have to leave your comfort zone and go hungry. But if it's for principle, for what is right, it's worth any hardship.
六二，明夷；夷于左股，用拯马壮，吉。The light wounded, injured in the left thigh. Rescue with a strong horse. Good fortune.
受了点小伤（左腿），离火居中但被土压——左腿伤了，但壮马还在，能救，但还能恢复——靠强壮的“马”（贵人、机遇、自身能力）拯救。挫折暂时，恢复就是好事。
You take a minor wound (the left thigh), Lí's Fire centered but pressed by the earth — the left thigh hurt, but the strong horse is still there, and rescue is possible — but you can recover — rescued by a "strong horse" (a benefactor, an opening, your own capacity). The setback is temporary; recovery is the good thing.
九三，明夷于南狩，得其大首；不可疾，贞。The wounded light hunting in the south, capturing the great chief. Do not be hasty; hold steadfast.
在艰难中获得突破——离火到三爻，火光最盛时被打压——但抓住了首要问题，不能急，慢慢来才稳，抓到了首要的问题。但不要急于一时，慢慢来才稳。
A breakthrough in the midst of hardship — Lí's Fire at the third line, struck down at the height of its blaze — but it grips the chief problem; don't rush, slow is what holds — you seize the central problem. But don't rush it; going slowly is what keeps it solid.
六四，入于左腹，获明夷之心，于出门庭。Entering the left belly, grasping the heart of the wounded light, then leaving the gate and court.
进入对方的核心区域，坤土初爻——入其腹地，看清了真相，然后果断离开，看清了真相、看清了对方的心思——然后果断离开。看清楚之后，离场是聪明。
Getting into the other side's inner circle, Kūn's Earth, first line — into their belly, seeing the truth, then leaving decisively — seeing the truth, seeing what they really intend — and then leaving decisively. Once you see clearly, walking away is the smart move.
六五，箕子之明夷，利贞。Ji Zi in the wounding of the light. Favorable to be steadfast and upright.
像箕子那样——坤土居中，厚土之下藏着明火，看似糊涂、其实清醒。在不利的环境中假装愚钝以保全自己——这是大智慧。
Like Ji Zi — Kūn's Earth centered, a bright fire hidden beneath the thick earth — seemingly muddled, in truth clear-eyed. In a hostile environment, feigning dullness to protect yourself is great wisdom.
上六，不明晦；初登于天，后入于地。No light, only darkness. At first ascending to Heaven, afterward falling to the earth.
本来在高处，最后掉到了地上——坤土到极处——天完全黑了，太阳从天上掉到了地下，失去原本的地位和光明。物极必反，处于巅峰时就要预料到会有这一刻。
Once high up, in the end falling to the ground — Kūn's Earth at its extreme — the sky gone fully dark, the sun fallen from the heavens down into the earth — losing the position and the light it had. What rises to an extreme must turn; at the summit, anticipate this moment.
