Dà Zhuàng · Great Strength
Thunder over Heaven
The Judgement
Dà Zhuàng. Favorable to be steadfast and upright.
You're in a state of great strength and vigor — power abundant, opportunities many. the upper trigram Zhèn is Thunder, element Wood, in the east — thunder cracking up in the sky, its sound shaking all four directions. Metal checks Wood, but here the thunder has already risen into Heaven, and Heaven can no longer hold it down — strength so great it has broken past the usual constraints. But the stronger you are, the more you must know restraint — don't bully the weak, don't charge ahead recklessly. Strength carried with propriety and measure is the strength that lasts.
大象The Image
Thunder high in the sky: the image of Great Power. The noble one, accordingly, does not tread where propriety forbids.
六爻The Six Lines
Strength in the toes. Going forward: misfortune. Hold to sincerity.
Strength concentrated in the toes — able to run and move, but rushing out brings trouble. However strong you are, don't be hasty to act; wait for the timing to be right.
Steadfast and upright: good fortune.
Hold to the center — vigorous, but not rash. Good fortune. Strength that knows how to hold itself is the mark of a true master.
The petty person uses strength; the superior person uses none. Steadfastness: adversity. A ram butts the hedge and entangles its horns.
The petty person shows off his force; the superior person holds it in check — which side will you take? To bull ahead is to be the ram ramming the fence: its horns get stuck.
Steadfast and upright: good fortune. Regret vanishes. The hedge breaks open, no more entanglement. Strength in the axle of a great cart.
The fence has broken open — Zhèn's Thunder, first line, the thunder finally sounding — the barrier broken, moving forward with the momentum — the obstacle is cleared. This is good, but ride the momentum and keep pushing; don't stop to look back.
Losing the ram in the open field. No regret.
Losing something in the course of change (the ram lost in the field) — Zhèn's Thunder centered, the thunder loud but the position soft — the strong ram lost amid the shifting, nothing to regret — but because it happened in an easy place, there's no real regret. Let go of what should be let go.
The ram butts the hedge and can neither retreat nor advance. Nothing is favorable. Through hardship, then good fortune.
The ram rammed the fence and got its horns stuck — Zhèn's Thunder at its extreme, spent yet still charging forward — can't go in, can't pull out, jammed. At a time like this all you can do is wait patiently through the hardship for a turn — struggling only makes it worse.
