Dùn · Retreat
Heaven over Mountain
The Judgement
Dùn. Prosperous and smooth. For the small, favorable to be steadfast and upright.
Stepping back and withdrawing is the wisdom of the moment. The lower trigram Gèn is Mountain, element Earth, in the northeast; — each at peace in its place, and that is the Retreat. Not flight, but refusing to clash head-on with petty forces. When the environment is against you, a deliberate retreat to preserve your strength is smarter than digging in. But retreat well — pull back without collapsing, and wait for the moment.
大象The Image
A mountain beneath heaven: the image of Retreat. The noble one, accordingly, keeps petty people at a distance — not with hatred, but with dignity.
六爻The Six Lines
Retreating at the tail. Danger. Do not use this for going anywhere.
You wanted to withdraw, but you're already too late — Gèn's Mountain, first line, the tail still showing — caught by the foot just as you tried to pull back — the tail is showing and you've been seen. At a time like this, don't act rashly; stay quiet and wait for the situation to ease.
Holding fast with the hide of a yellow ox. No one can loosen it.
Bind down the core thing with the toughest tie (the yellow-ox leather). Gèn's Mountain centered, the body of the mountain at its thickest — the most important thing lashed down with yellow-ox hide, that no one can undo. When you withdraw, keep hold of what matters most; don't let everything go.
Entangled retreat. There is illness, danger. Feed your servants and maids: good fortune.
Even as you withdraw you're still tangled up, still holding on — the one yang line of Gèn, wanting to retreat yet held back — the body withdraws but the heart still clings — in this state you can't manage great undertakings, though you can still tend to small matters near at hand. Let go completely, and you can leave completely.
Withdrawing with goodwill. For the superior person: good fortune. For the petty person: not so.
Withdrawing with goodwill — a good thing for the superior person, impossible for the petty one. Those who can let go can afford to retreat; those who can't find retreat itself an agony.
Fitting retreat. Steadfast and upright: good fortune.
A perfect withdrawal — keeping your dignity and your principles both. This is the highest grade of retreat: not defeat, but deliberate choice.
A graceful retreat. Nothing is unfavorable.
A complete, unburdened withdrawal — no lingering attachment, the sky wide open. The one who can do this gains true freedom.
