Héng · Long Lasting

Thunder over Wind

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Héng. Prosperous and smooth. No fault. Favorable to be steadfast and upright. Favorable to have somewhere to go.

The whole value here is in endurance, persistence, constancy. The lower trigram Xùn is Wind, in the southeast; the upper trigram Zhèn is Thunder, in the east — wind and thunder are both Wood: thunder borrows the wind to carry its sound, wind borrows the thunder to gain its force. Wood harmonizing with Wood, two woods making a grove — the most stable combination of all. Whether in work or in a relationship — whether it can last matters more than whether it can begin. Hold to your original intent, keep to your direction; don't be tempted away, don't quit halfway.

大象The Image

Thunder and wind together: the image of Duration. The noble one, accordingly, stands firm and does not change his course.

六爻The Six Lines

01
初六Initial Six

Seeking constancy too deeply. Steadfastness: misfortune. Nothing is favorable.

Demanding too much, too deeply, too fast at the very beginningXùn's Wind, first line, the wind boring deep the moment it starts to blow — wanting to till deep before the roots are even set — over-asking will break the relationship. Go slowly, build by degrees; you can't demand everything at the start.

02
九二Second Nine

Regret vanishes.

Keep to the centerXùn's Wood centered, the wind at its softest and steadiest — blowing evenly, the regret dissolving on its own — hold the middle course steadily, and what regret there was dissolves. Those who can stay centered over the long run are recognized in the end.

03
九三Third Nine

Not lasting in one's virtue; one may meet with disgrace. Steadfastness: humiliation.

Unable to hold character or commitments steadyXùn's Wind at the third line, the direction shifting wildly — east one moment, west the next, and no one respects it — the fickle person meets one humiliation after another. One who can't hold his ground will find his fortunes never settle either.

04
九四Fourth Nine

In the field, no game.

Doing the wrong thing in the wrong positionZhèn's Thunder, first line, the thunder striking empty ground — no quarry, the effort wasted — all the effort comes to nothing (no game in the field). Confirm first whether you're in the right place; only then talk about persisting.

05
六五Fifth Six

Lasting in one's virtue, steadfast. For the wife: good fortune. For the husband: misfortune.

Holding your own virtue constantZhèn's Thunder centered, the thunder steady — good for the gentle one, not necessarily for the hard — good for the more yielding role (single-minded devotion), not necessarily for the one who must lead and break new ground. It depends on your particular situation.

06
上六Top Six

Constancy in agitation. Misfortune.

Thrashing about restlessly even at the very topZhèn's Thunder at its extreme, rumbling on but now an empty sound — the topmost thunder rolls longest and to least effect — it ends in failure. One who keeps swaying after reaching the summit has no firm foundation.
