Yí · Nourishing
Mountain over Thunder
The Judgement
Yí. Steadfast and upright: good fortune. Observe how things are nourished, and seek your own food by your own means.
This is about the wisdom of "nourishment" — feeding the body, the heart, the character, and other people. The lower trigram Zhèn is Thunder, element Wood, in the east; the upper trigram Gèn is Mountain, element Earth, in the northeast — thunder stirring below the mountain, like a mouth chewing. Wood checks Earth, but here the wood doesn't destroy the earth — it draws nourishment up out of it: eat right and it feeds you, eat wrong and it harms you. Look at how you nourish yourself (what you eat, what you read, the friends you keep, what you pursue), and look at how many others you can nourish in turn.
大象The Image
Thunder beneath the mountain: the image of Nourishment. The noble one, accordingly, is careful of his speech and temperate in food and drink.
六爻The Six Lines
You cast aside your own sacred tortoise and watch me, mouth watering. Misfortune.
Leaving your own good thing unused (the sacred tortoise) while envying what's in someone else's mouth — Zhèn's Wood, first line — your own roots not yet set, and already eyeing another's leaves — a bad state. See your own worth clearly; don't go envying others.
Seeking nourishment upside down, against the norm; turning to the high hill for nourishment. Going forward: misfortune.
The direction of nourishment is reversed — Zhèn's Wood should grow upward, yet it stoops to beg the dregs from the soil below — depending on others when you should rely on yourself, reaching low when you should reach high. This misalignment brings a bad result.
Seeking nourishment against the norm. Steadfastness: misfortune. For ten years, do not use it. Nothing is favorable.
Nourishing yourself the wrong way — Zhèn's Wood at the third line — eating and drinking with no discipline, the roots all rotting — overeating, sinking into bad habits — leads, over time, to a serious problem. It can't be used, can't go on.
Seeking nourishment upside down. Good fortune. A tiger's stare, intent and fixed; its desire, pressing and pursuing. No fault.
Receiving nourishment in a seemingly upside-down way — Gèn's Mountain, first line — reaching down from the heights for food, like one in high place humbly seeking guidance from below — like learning from the young, or taking a subordinate's advice. As long as the motive is right and the aim is good, no problem.
Against the norm. Abide steadfast and upright: good fortune. Not fit to cross great rivers.
Going against convention but holding to the right path — Gèn's Earth centered — the mountain holds still and unmoving; unconventional, perhaps, but the base is solid — in this state, don't take risks (do not cross the great river). Holding your ground is enough; don't expand.
The source of nourishment. Adversity, then good fortune. Favorable to cross great rivers.
Becoming the source of nourishment for others — Gèn's Mountain at its extreme — the spring at the summit, flowing down to feed the whole mountain — a high position. Recognize the weight of that responsibility, stay alert at all times, never relax. But carry it well, and there is great blessing.
