天雷无妄Wú Wàng · Without Falsehood

乾上 · 震下Heaven over Thunder

卦辞The Judgement

无妄：元亨，利贞；其匪正有眚，不利有攸往。Wú Wàng. Sublimely prosperous and smooth. Favorable to be steadfast and upright. One who departs from the right will meet trouble; unfavorable to have somewhere to go.

顺应自然、不强求、不妄动——这是当下的正道。震雷在下属木居东方，乾天在上属金居西北——天下有雷，春雷响彻天空。金克木，但这里的雷不是被天压着，而是天借雷声传达天意——万物听到雷声就知道春天来了，自动生长，不用谁去催。不要刻意谋划、设计、强求结果——按本心做事，反而会有意外收获。但前提是动机要纯——心术不正的“不强求”反而会出问题。

Going with nature, not forcing, not acting rashly — this is the right path now. The lower trigram Zhèn is Thunder, element Wood, in the east; the upper trigram Qián is Heaven, element Metal, in the northwest — thunder rolling beneath Heaven, the spring thunder pealing across the sky. Metal checks Wood, but here the thunder isn't pressed down by Heaven — Heaven uses the thunder to carry its intent: all things hear the thunder, know spring has come, and grow of themselves, with no one urging them. Don't scheme, design, or strain after an outcome; act from your true heart, and the unexpected gain comes. But the motive must be pure — "not forcing" done with a crooked heart will still go wrong.

大象The Image

《象》曰：天下雷行，物与无妄；先王以茂对时育万物。Thunder rolls beneath heaven, and all things are paired with their true nature: the image of Innocence. The ancient kings, accordingly, in rich accord with the seasons, nourished all living things.

六爻The Six Lines

初九Initial Nine

初九，无妄，往吉。Without falsehood. Going forward: good fortune.

保持本心、不存私念地往前走——震雷初爻，雷声刚响——纯粹的春雷，不是人造的炮仗，这是最好的状态。不需要算计，按本心做事就有好结果。

Walk forward with a true heart and no hidden agenda — Zhèn's Thunder, first line, the thunder just sounding — pure spring thunder, not a man-made firecracker — the best state. No need to calculate; act from your genuine nature and the good result comes.

六二Second Six

六二，不耕获，不菑畬，则利有攸往。Not counting on the harvest while plowing, nor on the cleared field while breaking ground. Then favorable to have somewhere to go.

不为收获而耕耘、不为开荒而开荒——震木居中，木气最纯——只管长，不问果实，保持纯粹的动机。不带功利心做事，反而会有意外的回报。

Plowing without plowing for the harvest, breaking ground without grasping for the gain — Zhèn's Wood centered, the wood-energy at its purest — it just grows, never asking after the fruit — keep the motive pure. Do the work without the calculating eye on profit, and the unexpected reward comes.

六三Third Six

六三，无妄之灾：或系之牛，行人之得，邑人之灾。A calamity without falsehood: someone tethers an ox, a passerby leads it off — the passerby's gain is the townsman's loss.

意外的灾祸（被别人误会、躺枪）——震木到三爻——风吹草动，牛被路人牵走了，村民却背锅，你没做错什么，但还是受了牵连。这种事躲不开，认了就好——不要自责。

An unexpected disaster — Zhèn's Wood at the third line — a rustle in the grass, the ox led off by a passing traveler, and the villagers take the blame — getting blamed, caught in the crossfire — through no fault of yours. You did nothing wrong, but you're implicated anyway. This kind of thing can't be dodged; accept it. Don't blame yourself.

九四Fourth Nine

九四，可贞，无咎。Fit to be steadfast and upright. No fault.

守住正道、不动摇——九四阳爻进入乾天——天理昭昭，不用做什么，守住就是，这是你本来就具备的品质。坚持就好，不需要怀疑。

Hold to the right path, unshaken — the fourth line, yang, enters Qián's Heaven — the principle of Heaven is plain; nothing need be done, just hold — this is a quality you already possess. Just keep at it; no need to doubt.

九五Fifth Nine

九五，无妄之疾，勿药有喜。An illness arising without falsehood. Use no medicine; there will be a happy turn.

意外的小病、小挫折，不要急着用药、急着补救——九五阳爻居中，天心最正——天给的小考验，自然会好，有时候自然会好。过度反应反而坏事。

An unexpected small illness or setback — the fifth line, yang, centered, the heart of Heaven at its most upright — a small test from Heaven heals on its own — don't rush to medicate, don't rush to fix it. Sometimes it heals on its own. Overreacting only makes it worse.

上九Top Nine

上九，无妄，行有眚，无攸利。Without falsehood. To act brings trouble. Nothing is favorable.

本来不该轻举妄动，却还是动了——乾天到极处——天太高了，再往上一步就踏空，结果一定是凶。这时再有动作都是错的，最好彻底停下来。

You shouldn't have moved rashly, but you did — Qián's Heaven at its extreme — Heaven is too high, one step more and you step into the void — and the result is misfortune. Now any further action is a mistake; the best thing is to stop completely.
