天地否Pǐ · Hindrance
Heaven over Earth
The Judgement
Pǐ. Hindered, against the way of man. No benefit. The superior person remains steadfast and upright. The great departs, the small arrives.
The times are against you, and everything is blocked — the larger environment isn't in your favor, communication breaks down, opportunities are scarce. Kūn's Earth below keeps sinking lower — Heaven and Earth each go their own way, with a void between and no exchange. Advance is meeting; Hindrance is not-meeting — one word apart, and yin and yang are reversed. This isn't the moment to bull through. Pull back. Hide the sharpness, lower the noise, conserve resources, wait quietly — bad times always pass.
大象The Image
Heaven and earth do not commune: the image of Standstill. The noble one, accordingly, draws in his virtue to escape hardship and does not seek glory through rank and reward.
六爻The Six Lines
Pulling up the reeds, their roots come together. Steadfast and upright: good fortune. Prosperous and smooth.
When the time is bad, withdraw together with your allies, hold the line together — this is the best move. Kūn's Earth, first line — the roots are underground, and even in retreat they retreat together. You don't have to weather it alone; staying connected with people of like mind is how you all get through.
Embraced and submitting. For the petty: good fortune. The great person obstructs this path: prosperous and smooth.
When facing petty people or a bad environment, yielding is fine when needed, conceding is fine when needed. Kūn's Earth centered, its thick virtue bearing the load — earth can carry filth; this is not weakness but capacity. But inside you must hold your principles — never sell out your bottom line just to get along.
Hidden shame.
What you do in the dark will plant trouble that eventually surfaces. The third line, yin, out of place, Kūn's Earth hiding grime — some things shouldn't be buried in the soil; buried, they rot. Hold the line of basic decency. It may look like you lose ground in the short term — long term, it keeps you safe.
There is a mandate; no fault. Like-minded ones cling and share the blessing.
The dark before dawn — the closure is on the brink of turning. If you take up the assignment from above (or from the situation itself) and act, you'll pull the people around you out of the trap with you.
Bringing the hindrance to a halt. For the great person: good fortune. "It may fall! It may fall!" — tied to the cluster of mulberry trees.
You can already see the light at the end of the tunnel — but don't let your guard down. Stay watchful ("it may fall, it may fall!"). Only those who keep imagining things could still go wrong are the ones who actually stay safe.
Overturning the hindrance. First closure, then rejoicing.
The deadlock is about to break. The held-down situation has reached its turning point. But the turn doesn't happen by itself — someone has to push that last bit. If you've come this far, this is the moment to draw your blade.
