Tóng Rén · Seeking Harmony

Heaven over Fire

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Tóng Rén. Seeking harmony with others in the open field. Prosperous and smooth. Favorable to cross great rivers. Favorable for the superior person to be steadfast and upright.

You need to join with kindred spirits and act together. Qián's Heaven sits in the northwest, element Metal; Lí's Fire sits in the south, element Fire — Heaven above, fire also burning upward, the same direction. Yet Metal is checked by Fire: though Heaven and fire run the same way, their natures differ —Heaven is the vast cover, fire is the burning focus. But "harmony with others" is not the same as forming a clique — gather people on broad, fair principles, not by carving out an exclusive inner circle. A large heart gathers people.

大象The Image

Heaven together with fire: the image of Fellowship. The noble one, accordingly, sorts the kinds of things and tells them clearly apart.

六爻The Six Lines

01
初九Initial Nine

Seeking harmony at the gate. No fault.

Meet people out in the open, on broad groundLí's Fire, first line, the flame just lit — right at the doorway it lights everyone, hiding nothing, straightforward, no private agenda. Friendship made this way carries no risk.

02
六二Second Six

Seeking harmony with one's clan. Regret.

Closing yourself off in a small clique and pushing out those who aren't already inside Lí's Fire is centered and should shine on all, yet lights only one corner — fire warming a single household, its heat wasted is self-imprisonment. Open the circle, welcome those who are different — only then do you get any real scope.

03
九三Third Nine

Hiding fighters in the bushes, climbing the high ridge. For three years, unable to act.

Toward people you should be at one with, you're still secretly guardedLí's Fire at the third line, the blaze that should be rising is held down — fire hidden in the brush, unable to catch — afraid to come out into the open, yet stuck in a long stalemate. This state helps no one.

04
九四Fourth Nine

Mounting the city wall but unable to attack. Good fortune.

You had meant to forcefully shut down a rival voice — and then you saw it wasn't right and stopped. The fourth line, yang, enters Qián — hard striking hard, fire meeting Heaven; a forced assault only rebounds. Being able to stop is itself good: step back one pace, and the conflict dissolves.

05
九五Fifth Nine

Seeking harmony — first wailing and weeping, then laughter. The great army wins and they meet at last.

After painful disagreements and tears, you finally meet again across the table and break into smilesthe fifth line, yang, centered, Qián's Heaven in its true place, and Lí's fire answering from the upper trigram — Heaven and fire recognize each other at last — — but the path runs through the conflict. Real alliances are built only after the fight.

06
上九Top Nine

Seeking harmony in the open countryside. No regret.

Joining up with a few people in a far-off placeQián's Heaven at its extreme, Lí's fire now distant — the light no longer reaches the center, only the outskirts — limited reach, but no fault. Admitting you can only do small-scale work is its own kind of wisdom.
