Shī · Multitude

Earth over Water

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Shī. Be steadfast and upright. A venerable leader brings good fortune. No fault.

You're called on to lead a group, or take a team through a real challenge. The lower trigram Kǎn is Water, in the north — the hidden danger, the inner trouble; the upper trigram Kūn is Earth, in the southwest — the broad masses, the bearing strength. Kūn's Earth checks Kǎn's Water: the great land takes the dark currents into itself and turns danger into force, and this is the heart of the Army hexagram. Three things matter most: a respected leader, strict discipline, and a just cause — miss any one, and you fail. An army without legitimate purpose, or without discipline, always loses.

大象The Image

Water gathers within the earth: the image of the Army. The noble one, accordingly, embraces the people and gathers a following.

六爻The Six Lines

01
初六Initial Six

The army sets out with discipline. Otherwise, misfortune.

Set the rules first, get the order in place first — and only then act. Kǎn's Water, first line, just leaving the source — fail to build the dyke now and a flood follows. Move without a foundation, and even the right direction collapses into chaos. The hard discipline-work at the beginning is the root of everything going smoothly later.

02
九二Second Nine

In the midst of the army. Good fortune. No fault. The king bestows commands three times.

If you hold a leading position, the second line, yang, in the middle of Kǎn — the steadying anchor in the water, the one firm core of the whole hexagram, you'll receive the trust and weight of those above you. Carry that trust well — don't betray it, but also don't let it go to your head and overreach.

03
六三Third Six

The army perhaps carries corpses in carts. Misfortune.

The team is breaking down — morale gone, direction lost, people acting on their own initiative — and the losses are real. The third line, yin, out of place, Kǎn's water overflowing — the water is no longer held by earth and begins to turn back on itself. This isn't a moment to brazen it out. Admit the problem, restructure now, and you may still recover.

04
六四Fourth Six

The army retreats and camps. No fault.

Pulling back to conserve strength isn't defeat — it's strategy. The fourth line, yin, at the base of Kūn — earth begins to do its work, taking one step back with a heavy, all-holding poise. What looks like backing down is actually positioning for a better counterattack. Don't worry about how it looks; worry about keeping your hand.

05
六五Fifth Six

There are game in the fields. Favorable to seize them with cause. No fault. Let the senior lead the army. If the juniors lead, they will bring corpses back. Steadfastness: against misfortune.

Only fight when there is real causeKūn's Earth centered, its virtue broad and generous — not the one who strikes first, but the one who strikes back only after being wronged — when the trouble has come to your door. But once you act, hold a strict line: don't put incompetent or unreliable people in charge of the operation, or they'll bring you greater trouble in return.

06
上六Top Six

The great prince issues commands: open states, sustain houses. Inferior persons are not to be employed.

When things wrap up and rewards are handed out, the top line, yin, at the extreme of Kūn — the thick earth closes the books, and success or failure is judged right here — draw a clear line between those who should be promoted and those who should only be paid off. Capable but unprincipled people can be given material reward, but never put in positions of authority — or you plant seeds for bigger trouble later.
