Xùn · Proceeding Humbly
Wind doubled
The Judgement
Xùn. Slightly prosperous. Favorable to have somewhere to go. Favorable to see a great person.
You need to push things forward gently, gradually, by quiet penetration — not by force. Xùn sits in the southeast, element Wood — two winds following one after another, gust upon gust, getting into everything. The southeast is the place of “coming to completion in Xùn,” where all things are made whole — by the wind's ceaseless seeping in. Be like the wind that finds every crack: declare again and again, change things by slow soaking. Find someone worth following, and act through that connection.
大象The Image
Wind following upon wind: the image of the Gentle. The noble one, accordingly, repeats his commands and carries out his affairs.
六爻The Six Lines
Advancing, or retreating? Favorable to have a warrior's steadfastness.
Hesitating between advance and retreat — Xùn's Wind, first line, the wind just rising — a state suited to the warrior; where decisiveness is needed, wavering only spoils it — in this state, the firmness of a warrior (a decisive doer) is right. Where decisiveness is needed, wavering only spoils things.
Yielding even beneath the bed. Priests and exorcists are employed in profusion. Good fortune. No fault.
Bowing low even to beneath the bed — Xùn's Wood centered, the wind at its softest — calling on every means for help, a low posture that brings good fortune — calling on every means (priests, shamans) for help. Lowering one's posture to ask for assistance, on the contrary, brings good fortune and no fault.
Repeated yielding. Humiliation.
Yielding and stepping back again and again — Xùn's Wind at the third line, the direction shifting wildly — it draws contempt; gentleness too needs measure — it makes one look weak. Gentleness needs measure too — endless humility loses dignity.
Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game caught.
The earlier regret dissolves — Xùn's Wind at the fourth line, the wind steady — the hunt taking three kinds of game, gentleness with the power to act — the hunt brings three kinds of game. Gentleness with the strength to act, after all, brings results.
Steadfast and upright: good fortune. Regret vanishes. Nothing is unfavorable. No beginning, there is an end. Three days before the turning, three days after. Good fortune.
Holding firm and upright — Xùn's Wind centered, the wind at its most upright — all smooth, though the start may be rough and the end good — all goes smoothly. But mind it: the beginning may be rough; in the end it goes well. Important matters need planning before and execution after (three days before, three days after).
Yielding beneath the bed. Loses one's resources and axe. Steadfastness: misfortune.
Hiding beneath the bed in fear, and losing one's capital (the axe) too — Xùn's Wind at its extreme, the wind scattered — this overdone humility is itself misfortune — this overdone humility is itself misfortune. Yielding pushed too far becomes weakness.
