Jiě · Deliverance

Thunder over Water

The Five Phases — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — the traditional Chinese model of how things generate and check one another. When on, each reading adds notes on the hexagram's elemental dynamics.

The Judgement

Jiě. Favorable to the southwest. With nowhere to go, come back and return to normal: good fortune. With somewhere to go, do it early: good fortune.

The deadlock is loosening, the problem dissolving, the pressure releasing — it's time to travel light. The lower trigram Kǎn is Water, element Water, in the north; the upper trigram Zhèn is Thunder, element Wood, in the east — thunder cracking above the rain, the rain coming down, the blockage washed open. Water generates Wood, the rain nourishing the plants — but first the thunder splits the dark clouds, and only then can the rain fall — and this is the Deliverance. Deal with what needs dealing with quickly, let go of what should be let go quickly. Returning to a comfortable state (the southwest) is enough; no need to keep stirring things up.

大象The Image

Thunder and rain break loose: the image of Deliverance. The noble one, accordingly, pardons faults and is lenient with offenses.

六爻The Six Lines

01
初六Initial Six

No fault.

You've just gotten through the dangerKǎn's Water, first line, the water just beginning to recede — just ashore, don't rush to look back at the water — being fine is enough. Don't keep dwelling on it, don't keep picking at it. Let go of what should be let go; sum up what should be summed up.

02
九二Second Nine

In the field, catching three foxes and gaining a golden arrow. Steadfast and upright: good fortune.

Catching three foxes (clearing up three troubles) the one yang line within Kǎn — seizing the sly thing in the water, and getting the precious arrow too — and gaining a valuable reward (the golden arrow) — solving the problem thoroughly and cleanly.

03
六三Third Six

Bearing a load while riding in a carriage, inviting robbers to come. Steadfastness: humiliation.

Carrying goods on your back while riding a luxury carKǎn's Water at the third line, the water muddied — heavy load on your back, riding a fine carriage, you invite thieves — status and ability don't match, and it invites the thieves (trouble). Don't put on airs; do what fits who you actually are.

04
九四Fourth Nine

Loosen the bond at your big toe; then friends come, sincere.

05
六五Fifth Six

The superior person loosens the difficulty: good fortune. There is sincerity even toward the petty person.

Resolve the conflict with wisdomZhèn's Thunder centered, the thunder upright and strong — once the right one settles the matter, the wrong forces fall away of themselves — once the superior person (the right one) settles the problem, the petty forces (the wrong ones) naturally retreat.

06
上六Top Six

The prince shoots a hawk on the top of a high wall. He hits it. Nothing is unfavorable.

Take firm measures (shoot the arrow) against the hawk perched up high (the stubborn trouble)Zhèn's Thunder at its extreme, the thunder at its loudest — a precise strike is all you need, no need for a wide sweep. Everything goes well.
